Established in 1624 when it was used as the local bar for the builders of the Western Church, Cafe Chris is Amsterdam's oldest "Brown Cafe," truly a historical landmark. Its coziness is enhanced by having the smallest washrooms in town. Give it a try if you want a change from loud music and plastic décor and want to hit a real pub! The staff speaks English, the beer is cold and not overpriced and the atmosphere is one of relaxation. There are a lot of curious old features at this bar including a quirky toilet in the bathroom, which oddly flushes from outside the door and inside the bar! The dark interiors hide a friendly and authentic drinkers’ bar, full of locals and tourists who just chill out here. Sunday nights attract a cultured bohemian crowd through the bar’s loud opera music.
